A looming book deadline has made me a creature of the night!
I have become a creature of the night as my book deadline closes in, but it has given me a new love for the seaside Greek village we now call home.
It’s 3am and I’m looking out at the twinkling lights of our village harbor and the dark sea beyond, as I’ve done for the last few nights at this time, and will continue to do until the book is done and turned over to the editor. I’m enjoying the peaceful tranquility of the village, but also looking for camraderie and belonging with my fellow night creatures (human or animal!).
In the distance are the pinpricks of light from the island of Spetses, but just below my balcony the street lights shine on our narrow lane, illuminating the white walls of our neighbors and the clay tiles of the roofs on the houses lower down the hill. The lane is quiet, but critters skitter across periodically. Now and then I hear a baby cry, or someone talking, but mostly I hear a dogs barking sporadically, the light tinkle of the bell on the donkey at the end of the lane, the rustling of cats controlling the village rodent population, and the swish of a bat here and there.
